To terrorise is to use the systematic use of terror to achieve a chosen outcome. This is often violent, and is especially used as a means of coercion. Groups’ perception, however, of what terrorise actually means is extremely varied, as it can differ greatly depending upon which side of the fence a particular group or organisation sites.
Studies have found over 100 definitions of “terrorism”.
A large number of political organisations in particular have used Terrorism as a method to further their own aims and objectives. Left-wing, right-wing, nationalist, governmental, religious and revolutionary bodies have practiced terrorism in one shape or form. One common characteristic is terrorists’ indiscriminate use of violence against others to gain an advantage, be that for a physical end, or for publicity. In particular, terrorism plays on the human emotion of fear.
